The first draft translation of the Bible in the Inuktitut language, an official language of Nunavut, has been completed. The Canadian Bible Society project began in 1978 with four Anglican ministers from Baffin Island. Inuktitut has a long oral tradition but no written form of the language was made until the late 1800s when Edmund Peck brought the syllabic system (based on a phonetic form of writing) to the Arctic.
