CURRENTLY IN MUSIC
An intimate musical journey

Cathie Kearsley

Travelers
Carolyn Arends.
Signpost Music, 2001.

As part of the Living Room Series, Carolyn Arends’ Travelers is designed to bring an intimate musical experience to the listener. The folk style of music uses a predominantly guitar–mandolin backup and free verse or simple rhyme patterns for the lyrics. Guest musician Steve Bell adds his talents on guitar and mandolin on one song, and the calming, quiet musical nature of his worshipful style continues throughout. Lyrics derived from personal experience give the listener a sense that the artist is on a voyage of self-discovery and inviting the listener to join the journey.

The album is reflective, intimate lyrically and soft musically but is not of the worship genre. Of the 12 songs, 11 are original by Arends, and two of the songs have direct biblical allusions. Most of the songs appear based on personal experience or reflection and suit the theme of travelling, including Travelers (The Airport Song) and (I Wanna) Go Somewhere with You.

Quiet and intimate, this album is well suited to an audience who appreciate a feeling of shared experience with the artist as the listener is invited by the music to connect with the traveller.

Cathie Kearsley is director of human resources at Tyndale College and Seminary in Toronto.
