Staff in the conflict transformation program at Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Va., have created a web site expressing an “alternative perspective” on the military attack on Afghanistan and the US-led war against terrorism. The site (www.emu.edu/ctp/bse-intro.html) features over 20 articles “seeking to offer ideas [that go] beyond the current war hysteria present in the US”.

House of James of Abbotsford, B.C. was awarded 2001’s “Store of the Year” for Western Canada by Christian Booksellers’ Association Canada. In Canada for 31 years, CBA Canada is an association of about 200 retail store members and 50 suppliers members. The “Store of the Year” is selected by Christian resource suppliers in the CBA using four criteria: cleanliness and organization of facility; knowledgeable, friendly personnel and service; effective and pleasant marketing and merchandising; and financial dependability. The owner of House of James is Lando Klassen. He is a member of Central Heights MB Church, Abbotsford.

“The Story of Jesus”, the audio-drama version of the Jesus film, is being broadcast twice daily via short wave radio into Afghanistan in the Pashto and Dari languages. These languages are spoken by 85% of Afghanis. The transmissions are strong enough to reach Pakistan, Tajikistan and possibly Iran.

Awareness of top-selling books among adults in the US does not correspond with sale figures, according to a new study released by Barna Research Group. British author J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series includes four books that have sold an estimated 24 million copies. Although the target audience for those books is children, 69% of American adults are aware of the series. The apocalyptic Left Behind books, co-written by Christian authors Jerry Jenkins and Tim LaHaye, have sold over 45 million copies, yet only 24% of adults are aware of the series. The Prayer of Jabez has sold over 5 million copies in less than two years, but only 13% of adults are aware of Bruce Wilkinson’s book.

Christian music sales are up over 20% in recent weeks due in part by reaction to the tragedy of Sept. 11. According to the Gospel Music Association, Christian music is on pace to sell 50 million records this year for the first time in the industry’s history. Bible sales are also up, between 27% and 30%, according to Berean and Family Christian Stores. Books on prophecy are up 80% since Sept. 11.
