Allan and Irene Labun began serving as interim pastor couple at Jubilee Mennonite Church in Winnipeg on Oct. 1. Most recently, Allan served from April to August 2001 as interim pastor at Lendrum MB Church, Edmonton, while senior pastor David Dyck was on a study leave. Previously, he was senior pastor of Kitchener (Ont.) MB Church for six years, was senior pastor of McIvor Ave. MB Church in Winnipeg for over 17 years and was associate pastor at North Kildonan MB Church in Winnipeg for two years. He also was a high school teacher for 11 years in Winnipeg, and in Malaysia with the Canadian International Development Agency. He has a B.A. and a B.Ed. from the University of Manitoba, an M.Div. from MB Biblical Seminary, Fresno, Calif., and a D.Min. from Denver Conservative Baptist Seminary. The Labuns have three children and four grandchildren.
Brad Thiessen, director of media and communications for MBMS International, Fresno, Calif., underwent surgery for a malignant brain tumour on Oct. 13. The life-threatening tumour was removed, but doctors say it could recur in five to 10 years. He is doing well, and is scheduled to see an oncologist and undergo radiation treatment and chemotherapy for two months. The brain tumour was discovered when he suffered a seizure and lost conscious while at home on Oct. 8. His wife Rachelle called an ambulance. The Thiessens have two sons, Kyle, 3, and Evan, 2 months. MBMS International is the global mission agency of the Canadian and US MB Conferences.
The opening of a new Korean Anabaptist Centre in Seoul, Korea, was scheduled to be held on Nov. 2. The Korean Anabaptist Centre provides Anabaptist/Mennonite resources, education and training for individuals, groups and churches. It emphasizes Christian discipleship, a peace theology and community. Tim and Kami Froese, formerly missionaries with MBMS International, direct the centre on behalf of three Mennonite agencies, the Commission on Overseas Missions (General Conference Mennonite Church), Mennonite Board of Missions (Mennonite Church) and Mennonite Central Committee. The Froeses are members of Jubliee Mennonite Church, Winnipeg.
Franz Rathmair, regional director of Europe/ Commonwealth of Independent States for MBMS International in Steyr, Austria, was scheduled to undergo surgery for prostate cancer on Nov. 22.
Kelstern (Sask.) Community Church held a commissioning service for pastor couple Ray and Iris Ulriksen on Aug. 26. Saskatchewan MB Conference minister Ralph Gliege led the commissioning service.

Baptisms and new members

New Life Christian Church in Toronto held its first baptism and acceptance of members Easter Sunday, Apr. 15, welcoming 14 new members, 7 by baptism, 4 by transfer and 3 by confession of faith. The previous Sunday, New Covenant Christian Fellowship (MB) and Bridlewood Brethren In Christ Church merged.
