Waterloo, Ont.
Toews resigns as president of Conrad Grebel College

John E. Toews has announced his resignation as president of Conrad Grebel College in Waterloo, Ont., effective December 31, 2002.

The resignation has been submitted to permit Toews’s retirement in June 2003. In announcing his resignation to a meeting of the College faculty and staff on June 22, the Board of Governors commended Toews for his many accomplishments during his tenure as president, a position he assumed in January 1996.

Board Chair Lee Sauer cited Toews’s leadership and direction in steering the College to a sound financial basis as one of his most significant achievements. Toews ended the College’s operating deficits and retired both operating and capital debts. Toews strengthened the College’s financial picture through the creation of reserves from surplus funds generated within the operating budget. During his term, he expanded the donor based, resulting in over twice the amount of donations to the College’s Annual Fund.

“Dr. Toews has restored confidence in the viability of Conrad Grebel College as a Mennonite-based educational institute, resulting in a more vibrant and dynamic community,” said Sauer.

The Board expressed its appreciation for Toews’s dedication and commitment, and for the impact he has had on the College during his term. A search committee has been set up to begin the process of finding a new leader for the College.
