MBMS International, the global mission agency of MB churches in Canada and the US, is responding to flooding in Kinshasa, the capital of Democratic Republic of Congo.

MBMSI is sending $5,000 to meet the critical needs, including medical assistance to six people seriously injured as a result of flooding that occurred at the end of May.

According to a report filed by Pakisa Tshimika, director of MBMSIs Africa programs, 60 people are dead. Among the dead is a 13-year-old girl, who belonged to a Mennonite Brethren family.

On Friday, May 18, a heavy rain fell on Kinshasa. The area hardest hit is one where the Congo MB Conference has several churches, he reports.

In total, 14 families lost their homes and one school and two churches have been destroyed or heavily damaged. An estimated 23 families from MB congregations lost all their possessions, and 50 families are in urgent need of food.

MBMSI is requesting support from its constituency in its efforts in Congo. Funds are needed to assist in a number of projects:

- Roofing materials for houses and churches $6,000 (Project P-0140a)

- Temporary shelter for 14 families $3,500 (Project P-0140b)

- Continued food assistance for 50 families $2,900 (Project P-0140c)

- Replacement of lost household goods $1,450 (Project P-0140d)

- Replacement of church and school properties $19,000 (Project P-0140e)
