Great Britain’s Pagan Federation, which represents druids and witches, is claiming that the TV shows “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” have fueled a rapidly growing interest in witchcraft among children. The organization averages 100 inquiries a month from kids who want to become witches. In September 2000, it appointed its first-ever youth officer to counsel young people.

A comic book about the life of Pope John Paul II has been approved by the Vatican. The comic book features the Pontiff playing soccer and downhill skiing.

Aggressive tendencies in children can be reduced when television viewing and video game playing were cut back, according to a new Stanford University study. Researchers found a decrease in the level of aggression at a San Jose, Calif. elementary school after an effort to get pupils to watch less television. The effect was greatest for children who were showing signs of hostility. The study, published in Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, is the latest in a string of studies linking violence with television and video games. But it is the first to show that those tendencies can be reversed.

Mennonite Publishing House, Inc. is the name of the new publishing entity of Mennonite Church USA/Mennonite Church Canada. On Feb. 1, MPH began conducting merged operations with Faith & Life Press, based in Newton, Kan., and Faith & Life Bookstores (Berne, Ind., and Newton). The new MPH Board, which is made up of members from Canada and the US, met for the first time Feb. 9. Dennis M. Good has been named executive vice-president for MPH. He will assume the title of acting publisher, an interim position, when current MPH president and publisher J. Robert Ramer retires July 31, 2001. Curriculum for Sunday school and Bible study and other resources will now be available through the Faith & Life Resources division. Also included will be the periodicals Story Friends, On the Line, With, Purpose, Christian Living, and Rejoice!  the devotional guide produced in conjunction with Mennonite Brethren. The Herald Press division will publish trade books. The bookstores will display the name Provident Bookstores. The new MPH is the result of the merger of the General Conference Mennonite Church and the Mennonite Church.
