The heartbeat of the world for mission

Andrew Hershey-Bergen

Final Analysis: A Decade of Commentary on the Church and World Missions
Jim Reapsome. Wheaton, Ill.: Evangelism and Mission Information Service, 1999.

Jim Reapsome is editor for World Pulse, a magazine surveying key events in the world and how they affect missions. One of the highlights in every issue is Reapsome’s editorial. This book is a collection of 100 of his best.

Reapsome has a talent for pointing out issues that normally hide in our collective blind spots. He is undeniably optimistic about the possibilities of global missions, yet his writing defines some major areas of concern facing the church.

The book groups his editorials into categories such as “The Cultural Challenge”, “The Call” and “Missionary Life”. This book has a multitude of uses. It would be a good resource for small groups that are missions minded. Short excerpts could be provided in church bulletins to provoke thoughts on Sunday morning. It is also an excellent source for meaningful quotes on missions.

Several of Reapsome’s essays are valuable for us as an MB conference as well. One of his loudest calls is to remove barriers between groups, especially Christian groups. We MBs would do well to tackle this matter with all seriousness as we enter the third millennium of Christian mission.

Andrew Hershey-Bergen lives in Hepburn, Sask.
