Herbert and Maureen Klassen of Abbotsford, B.C. are interim co-directors of the new Mennonite Centre in Molochansk (formerly known as Halbstadt), Ukraine. A former Girls’ School was purchased from the city and will be renovated later this spring. A number of pilot medical aid programs have already begun in Nieder Khortitsa, Zaporozhye and Kutuzovka. Plans for the Mennonite Centre include a youth centre where youth can use computers and learn English as a second language; a centre for pensioners that will offer a variety of social aid programs (the average pension is $8-10 US per month, and food costs are relatively high); and a mid-week Bible study run by members of the nearby Kutuzovka Mennonite Church. Medical needs in the region will be assessed in April by Vancouver doctors Art and Marlyce Friesen. The Klassens previously helped launch the Mennonite Centre in Moscow in 1992 during a five-year ministry term in Russia. Herb is the son of C.F. Klassen, who earlier helped Mennonites emigrate from the Soviet Union to North America.
