Previous | Next Abbotsford, B.C. New churches for B.C.

During the fall and winter months, three new Mennonite Brethren congregations have emerged in British Columbia:

 Mark and Shirley Tucker |
Heritage Mountain Community Church with Mark and Shirley Tucker. This church in Port Moody had its launch service in November 2000 and has Sunday morning attendance of just over 100. Eagle Ridge Bible Fellowship in Coquitlam provided a core group of people and significant financial help as a partner with the B.C. MB Conference Board of Church Extension in this church plant. Mark Tucker came to this project as a recent graduate from Associated Canadian Theological Schools and from a successful business career. Shirley Tucker is on the mend from a bout of cancer that surfaced near the beginning of this assignment.

Promontory Mountain Community Church with Brian and Becky Wiebe. The Wiebes recently served for a year as associate pastor couple in The River church plant in Calgary. They began their assignment in Chilliwack in December and had their first public event on December 24 with an attendance of 130 people. The public launch service was on March 11. There has been good support from the Chilliwack area MB churches both financially and through providing core couples. This church plant is off to a strong start.

 Becky and John Koo |
Vancouver Omnuri Korean Church with John and Becky Koo. This is a new church adoption. John and Becky Koo, who have been in Mennonite Brethren ministry for many years, began this Korean church in the summer of 2000 after a brief overseas ministry. This emerging church, with attendance already near 50 people, was accepted as an MB church plant in January 2001. It will be the first Korean MB church in British Columbia aside from the Korean ministry done by Willingdon Church in Burnaby.

The B.C. MB Conference Board of Church Extension follows the slogan of Paul the apostle in making the most of every opportunity. Some church plants are initiated solely by BOCE, some in partnership with local churches, some as a direct parenting effort by an existing church, and others through the vision of individuals or through the adoption of an existing or emerging group. We are grateful for the continued harvest of seeing an average of one person out of every five attenders in our church plants making commitments to follow Christ. James Nikkel, Executive Director, Board of Church Extension
