Throughout the entire hearing, Jesus gives only one answer. . . . “Tell us if you are the Son of God.” . . . “Are you the King of the Jews?” “Yes I am,” is Jesus’ simple reply to both questions. Why does He say that? Why are these the only questions He answers? Why?

One of the strangest truths we encounter in Scripture is that God takes full responsibility for the presence of suffering and pain in the world: “I bring prosperity and create disaster; I, the LORD, do all these things. . . . Woe to him who quarrels with his Maker. . . . Does the clay say to the potter ‘What are you making?’ ” (Isaiah 45:7,9).
