West Portal MB Church in Saskatoon held a commissioning service July 9 for its church planters Dwayne and Janet Harms. Special guests included former pastors Ewald Unruh, Abe Klassen and Ralph Gliege. Senior pastor Dwayne Barkman spoke about the present state of the church. Dwayne Harms spoke about the future of the new daughter church, called Living Hope Church. Unruh, executive director of the Canadian MB Conference Board of Evangelism, gave the message, saying that the West Portal Church is not planting a church because it is too big, but rather because it cannot reach everyone in Saskatoon. Barkman and Gliege, Saskatchewan MB Conference minister, led the commissioning service. Harms’s grandmother, Agatha Harms, gave a special prayer. About 100 people call Living Hope Church their home church. It began holding Sunday evening services at the West Portal building in January 2001, but is seeking a more permanent location.
