John Hua resigned as pastor of Port Moody (B.C.) Pacific Grace Chinese Church Oct. 22, after serving for three years. He is now pastoring a Baptist church in Toronto. Previously, he pastored Richmond (B.C.) Peace Chinese Mennonite Church for six years. He has a bachelors degree from Northwest Baptist Theological College in Langley, B.C. and an M.Div. from the China Graduate School of Theology in Hong Kong, and has also studied at Associated Canadian Theological Schools in Langley. His wife Birdie, who also has an M.Div. from China Graduate School of Theology, served for one year as pastor of training and acting pastor of the Port Moody Church.
Anthony Cheung has accepted a call to be interim pastor at Port Moody (B.C.) Pacific Grace Chinese Church, effective April 2001. He is currently studying at Associated Canadian Theological Schools in Langley, B.C. (Northwest Baptist Theological Seminary). Previously, he worked at the National Archives of Canada (Burnaby, B.C.) for five years, worked as a medical librarian for the Department of National Defence for 20 years and taught at Toronto Western Hospitals Attison School of Nursing for three years. He has a B.N. from the University of Windsor, a B.A. from the University of Waterloo and an M.L.S. from the University of Toronto. He and his wife Rebecca have two grown children.
Alex Suderman has been hired as associate pastor of youth at Fairview MB Church in St. Catharines, Ont., effective Jan. 1, to be reviewed annually by the church. He is currently completing a term as a pastoral youth intern in the Fairview church as part of his B.A. in pastoral ministry requirements at Bethany Bible Institute in Hepburn, Sask. Previously, he served as a pastoral intern at Flin Flon (Man.) MB Church for two-and-a-half months. He has a B.R.S. in Christian ministries from Bethany.
Vong Luangkhamdeng has resigned as pastor of Lao Christian MB Church in Surrey, B.C., effective Dec. 16, after serving for eight years, including an internship. He will be pastoring a Lao church in Rockford, Ill. Since 1995, he has worked with the Laos Conference of Churches of Canada, serving as secretary and vice-president for a number of years and teaching at youth conferences and workshops. He has a B.A. from Columbia Bible College in Abbotsford, B.C. He and his wife Chan have a son, Emmanuel, 7 months.
Neil Block has been hired as three-quarter-time interim pastor at Newton (Man.) Community Fellowship, effective Nov. 14. Previously, he pastored Winkler (Man.) MB Church for four years, was director of Manitoba MB Conference Missions and Church Extension for five years, was pastor at Brooklands Community Church in Winnipeg for six years and was youth/music minister at Bridgeway Community Church in Swift Current, Sask. for four years. He also sang in the Messengers Quartet and taught elementary and junior high school for six years. He has studied at Bethany Bible Institute in Hepburn, Sask., Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C. and Trinity Western University in Langley, B.C., and has an M.A. in Christian education from Canadian Theological Seminary in Regina. He and his wife Ruth have two grown children.
In fall, Ed and Karin Willms began pastoring Gateway Christian Fellowship in St. Catharines, Ont., a church planting initiative that has the support of eight MB congregations and the Ontario MB Conference Board of Church Extension. The congregation held its chartering service Nov. 5 (See MBH news, Dec. 1). Previously, Willms was associate pastor at Scott Street MB Church for five years, and was lead pastor of Cornerstone Community Church in Dartmouth, N.S. for three years and associate pastor there for three years. He has a B.A. from the University of Winnipeg, a B.R.S. from MB Bible (now Concord) College in Winnipeg and an M.Div. from MB Biblical Seminary in Fresno, Calif. The Willmses have three daughters, Kiersten, 13, Renee, 9, and Breanna, 5.
K.J. Weinberger began pastoring The Dwelling Place in Kitchener, Ont. on May 1. It is a church plant of Waterloo (Ont.) MB Church (See MBH news, Dec. 1). Weinberger, who grew up in a Mennonite home, has done church planting work with the Baptist Convention of Ontario and Quebec, and has pastored a church near Brampton, Ont. and a Khmer congregation in Vancouver. He has a B.A. from the University of Waterloo and an M.Div. from Tyndale Seminary in Toronto. He also has studied at Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Elkhart, Ind., Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, Calif. and Regent College in Vancouver. He and his wife Charlene have two children, Lucas, 5, and Mikayla, 2.
On Feb. 13, Panorama Community Church in Surrey, B.C. baptized Doug Murray, Helga Murray, Robyn Gerevas, Scott Mattu, Tommy Mattu, Christine Vea, Vance McColl, Brenda Lee McColl, Kelly Drummond-Hay, Jacqueline Klassen, Kevin Burtnick, Andrea Klassen, Allisha Urena, Jean Jen and Jenny Jen.
On June 11, Panorama Community Church in Surrey, B.C. baptized Leah Hall, Christine Rose, Laura Olson, Jennifer Peters, Andrea Gottschalk, Heather Butster, Jason Winters, Laura Hall, Harvie Coan, Shanalisa Keller, Kristy Newman, Barry Clarke, Katherine Clarke, Darcy Mahler and Lynn Chanona.
On Sept. 10, Panorama Community Church in Surrey, B.C. baptized Jill Fisher, Lynda Durkin, Heather Sterner, Anita Wenman, Lorna Hall, Phil Wiebe, Michelle Wiebe, Todd Dornian, Russell Dornian, Kalia Salmond, Joshua Giller and Shayne Davis.
Glenn Eastwood, Lisa Eastwood, Doreen Charette and Brad Juhala were baptized Nov. 12 in Panorama Community Church, Surrey, B.C.
Cedar Park MB Church in Delta, B.C. baptized and welcomed into membership Kathleen Beaton (June 25), Carlos De La Rosa (June 25), Jared Keen (Sept. 3), Julie Keen (Sept. 3) and Lucy De La Rosa (Sept. 24).
