REFLECTIONS
Did God really make iron float?

Hilda J. Born

2 Kings 6:1-7

At the conclusion of our family gathering, most of the happy campers went down to Gardom Lake for a final swim. Amid some boisterous splashing, an essential pair of glasses was knocked off. Nobody saw where they disappeared into the murky depths.

Frolicking stopped as guilt settled in. Our nephew, the owner of those glasses, is the father of four young children. He needs glasses to drive and do his daily work.

At the water’s edge, with mud oozing between my toes, I thought of Elisha’s exuberant young prophets. They lost their much-needed axe-head in water similar to this. God brought the axe back to the surface (2 Kings 6:6). Couldn’t He do it again?

A young swimmer volunteered to dive down and scan the lake bottom. Fastening her goggles, she jumped in and disappeared beneath the ripples.

We held our collective breath, straining to see her surface. Before we saw her face, a dripping arm jutted from the blue. Gripped tightly in her hand was that vital pair of glasses. Incredible, that God would reveal the exact spot on the very first dive!

Reflections is a column of brief reflections on Scripture passages. This one is by Hilda J. Born of Abbotsford, B.C. Freelance submissions for Reflections (200-250 words in length) are welcome.
