Previous | Next First you pray
 Lillian Giesbrecht
Before I began serving as a volunteer for the chaplains department in our hospital, Dianne, the coordinator, advised me on a few matters. She offered tips on how to approach a patient, what questions to ask or to avoid and
how to handle a skeptic. Showing me the chapel, she said, One more tip. Before going on the wards, first you pray.

Those three words turned out to be the most important advice of all. Communication with God in this small sacred spot before facing the suffering and sorrow became a source of power and peace. If I failed to observe this brief, private exercise, I would notice it in the results of my efforts.

Diannes reminder that morning proved beneficial in other areas of my life as well. One incident comes to mind. My hand on the doorknob, I was on my way to yet another dental appointment. I was irritated over the time and money I was having to spend with no positive results. I wondered if my dentist cared. This time I would voice my displeasure. Suddenly Diannes three words went off like an alarm in my head. I yielded to the reminder, and briefly and humbly asked the Lord for a shift of mood. I left the house repaired. I did confront my dentist, but with grace. It resulted in him apologizing and offering a refund all in a warm and friendly way. I hate to think how this could have turned out if I had not followed Diannes tip first you pray.
