The gospel radio drama “Unshackled!” has reached a milestone unmatched by any other radio drama: 50 years of continuous broadcasting. First aired on WGN in Chicago Sept. 23, 1950, the Pacific Garden Mission’s program is heard today on five continents over 1,200 stations and outlets. In addition to English, the program is broadcast in Arabic, Russian, Romanian and Spanish. The program features half-hour stories of people whose lives have been transformed and renewed through a relationship with Christ. The first programs were done by amateur actors, but today professionals are used, including Larry Moran and Russ Reed. Pacific Garden Mission budgets about $8,000 US per broadcast.

Phil Vischer, president of the Chicago-based Big Ideas Productions that makes “VeggieTales”, was named among “the top 10 people to watch on the spiritual landscape” on the Sept. 1 airing of the Public Broadcasting Service newsmagazine “Religion and Ethics NewsWeekly”. The top-10 list represented people from various religions, including Christianity, Judaism, Islam and Buddhism. “VeggieTales” is the best-selling Christian videotape series for children that uses humour and animated vegetable characters to tell Bible stories.
