Connie Epp, Wesley Toews and Christine Longhurst are currently sharing pastoral duties at River East MB Church in Winnipeg. Epp is serving as part-time interim pastoral associate for pastoral care. She has planned and led worship services, has preached and was a deaconess in the church. She has a B.A. in Christian studies from Concord College and a B.A. in drama from the University of Winnipeg. She also serves on the Committee of Reference and Counsel for the Manitoba MB Conference. She and her husband Ken have two children, Jeremy, 18, and Karly, 15.

Toews is serving as part-time interim associate pastor with responsibilities for preaching. He has taught biblical studies at the University of Winnipeg, Concord College and Canadian Mennonite Bible College. He also is executive assistant to the deans office at Canadian Mennonite University. He has B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Winnipeg and a Ph.D. from Princeton (N.J.) Theological Seminary. He and his wife Sherry have two children, Kinsey, 18, and DeLayne, 15.

Longhurst, who has been pastor of worship for the last four years at the church, is adding administrative duties to her position. Previously, she was editor of the Worship Together hymnal for two years and taught at Nazarene Bible College in Winnipeg for five years. She has a B.R.S. from MB Bible (Concord) College in Winnipeg and a M.Sac. Music from Perkins School of Theology in Dallas, Tex. She and her husband John have two children, Rebecca, 8, and Dylan, 5.
Lori Schmidt is serving as half-time interim associate pastor of Christian education at Lendrum MB Church in Edmonton. She is also president of Loral Management Group, a management consulting firm. Previously, she was director of sales and marketing for ArmorThane Coatings Inc. for 1 year and worked with Alberta Economic Development for 13 years. She has a B.Ed. from the University of Alberta. She has also studied at the University of Waterloo, Canadian Management Centre, the University of British Columbia and Canamera Management Inc. She and her husband Allan have a son, Tyler, 2.
Marvin and Eunice Schmidt are serving as part-time interim pastor couple of Saanich Community Church in Victoria. Previously, Marvin pastored churches in the US, pastored Lendrum MB Church in Edmonton for 10 years, was church planter of Mill Woods MB Church near Edmonton and pastored South Langley MB Church in Langley, B.C. for nine years. He has a Bachelor of Divinity degree from MB Biblical Seminary in Fresno, Calif., and has studied at Kansas University and Luther Northwestern Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minn. The Schmidts have three children and four grandchildren.
Herb Brandt began serving as part-time interim associate pastor at Culloden MB Church in Vancouver on Sept. 1. Previously, he was interim senior pastor of Fraserview MB Church in Richmond, B.C. for two years and was associate pastor there for six years. He also pastored Killarney Park MB Church in Vancouver for nine years, Richmond Bethel MB Church for 14 years and Willow Park Church in Kelowna, B.C. for six years. He has a B.Ed. from the University of British Columbia and a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Northwest Baptist Seminary in Langley, B.C. He and his wife Anne have four children and five grandchildren.
George Baier is retiring as senior pastor of Culloden MB Church in Vancouver, effective Oct. 31, 2001. He came to the church as pastor to seniors Nov. 1, 1998 and became senior pastor May 1, 1999. Previously, he was associate pastor of Clearbrook MB Church in Abbotsford, B.C. for six years, pastored Peachland (B.C.) Baptist Church for five years, pastored Central MB Church in Winnipeg for four years, was youth pastor at Clearbrook MB Church, and served with MBMS International in Germany and Congo. He has a Diploma of Sacred Music from MB Bible (Concord) College in Winnipeg, a B.A. from Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kan., and an M.A. from Providence Theological Seminary in Otterburne, Man. He and his wife Mary have one daughter and three granddaughters.
Kris and Carla Peters began serving as pastor couple of Westview Community Church in Grassy Lake, Alta. on Aug. 2. Previously, Kris was director of music at Millar College of the Bible, Pambrun, Sask., 1992-97. He also was director at Dauphin (Man.) Bible Camp, affiliated with Canadian Sunday School Mission, during the summers 1993-97. He has a B.A. from Millar College of the Bible and an M.Div. from Regent College in Vancouver.
Adam Wiggins began serving as full-time interim pastor of Chilliwack (B.C.) Central MB Church on Sept. 11. Previously, he pastored Eastview Community Church in Winnipeg for seven years and Vauxhall (Alta.) MB Church for five years. He has an M.Div. from Northwest Baptist Seminary in Langley, B.C. and has studied pre-veterinary science at the University of Victoria. He and is wife Sandy have three children, Katrina, 13, Joshua, 11, and Annelise, 9.
Miroslav Peyter began serving as full-time pastor of the Slavic MB congregation in Winnipeg in July. The church is being established by the Board of Church Extension of the Manitoba MB Conference. The congregation of 15-20 people currently meets at Portage Ave. MB Church. Previously, Peyter was a radio technician apprentice with Family Life Network (formerly MB Communications) in Winnipeg for one year, a Ukrainian radio program producer in Zaporozhye and a youth pastor and preacher in the Baptist Church in Ukraine for 10 years. He has B.Th. and M.A. degrees from Odessa Theological Seminary in Odessa, Ukraine.
Gary Burke has resigned as youth pastor at Leamington (Ont.) MB Church, effective Nov. 21, after serving one-and-a-half years. Previously, he worked for Net.Water Industries near Red Deer, Alta. for two years. He has a B.R.E. from Ontario Bible College in Toronto. He is currently pursuing an M.A. in Christian education from Providence Theological Seminary in Otterburne, Man. He and his wife Beverly are seeking the Lords will for the future.
Randy Ens has resigned as pastor of administration at Northview Community Church in Abbotsford, B.C., effective Oct. 15, after serving for eight years. He will become president of the Ohio-based Dutch Corp. Previously, he owned an accounting firm in California for 10 years and was involved in various accounting businesses. He has a B.Sc. in business from Fresno (Calif.) State University and is a Certified Public Accountant with the State of California. He and his wife Sandy have two children, Tiffany, 19, and Geoff, 16.
Ruth Klassen has accepted the position of Spanish Ministry Assistant at Family Life Network in Winnipeg. Her responsibilities are to correspond with Spanish listeners from all over Latin America and to assist the Spanish radio producer. Previously, she was a teacher and Christian education resource worker with MBMS International in Colombia, Spain and Mexico for 23 years. She has an M.Div. from MB Biblical Seminary in Fresno, Calif. She retired from MBMSI in August 1999 and now lives in Winnipeg.
On Aug. 13, Maria Kunz and Glen Pederson were baptized and joined MB Gospel Mission Church in Carrot River, Sask.
Byron Rempel-Burkholder of Newton, Kan. has been appointed editor of Rejoice!, the devotional magazine co-produced by the General MB Conference (Kindred Productions), General Conference Mennonite Church (Faith & Life Press) and Mennonite Church (Herald Press). Rempel-Burkholder succeeds Philip Wiebe, who resigned effective Nov. 30 (see MBH, Oct. 6). Since 1997, Rempel-Burkholder has been editorial director for Faith and Life Press. The son of Mennonite missionaries in Ethiopia, Rempel-Burkholder worked with MBMS International in Winnipeg 1981-84, was a missionary in Congo 1988-91 and was a pastor in the General Conference Mennonite Church. He also has written for a variety of inter-Mennonite publications. He and his wife Melita have two children.
The Historical Commission of the General MB Conference has announced the winners of the 2000 P.M. Friesen History Essay Contest. Darren Duerksen, a student at MB Biblical Seminary in Fresno, Calif., is the winner of the graduate school/seminary division for his paper, Insiders Evangelizing the Outsiders: Reedley Mennonite Brethren Churchs Interaction with and Outreach to Japanese and Hispanic Communities. Brian Penner, a student at Fresno Pacific University, is the winner of the college/university undergraduate division for his paper, Understanding the Role of the Mennonite Brethren Church in World War II: A Review of Different Interpretations and Experiences. Sonya Kohut, a student at MB Collegiate Institute in Winnipeg, is the winner of the high school division for her paper, World War II: Conversations with Two Mennonite Women. The P.M. Friesen History Essay Contest was established in 1992 by the Historical Commission to encourage original research and writing by students. Commission members are the judges for the contest.
Tom and Judith Snowdon, formerly of Winnipeg, currently of Sackville, N.B., began serving as Mennonite Central Committee representatives in the Maritimes on Aug. 1. Tom is also MCC director for Eastern Canada. He will help coordinate MCCs work in Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador. The Snowdons replace Brian Elliot, who was the first official MCC regional representative for the Maritimes. Tom joined MCC Canada in 1997 as coordinator of its peace programs and economic justice initiatives. Previously, he was a Pentecostal pastor for 18 years. Judith has taught piano, worked as a church pianist, composed choral music and worked closely with issues of abuse in the church. MCC currently has two full-time workers in the region one in restorative justice and the other in economic development work.
