CURRENTLY IN MUSIC
Norman slick, squeaky clean

Kimbal Siebert

Picture
Ten Thousand Days

Bebo Norman. Watershed Records, 1999.

Bebo Norman turns out a very slick package with his 1999 release Ten Thousand Days. Confident vocal stylings, well-executed instrumentation and downright crafty songwriting are all present and accounted for here. In terms of genre, the ideal term would be “contemporary Christian music”. In every sense, short tunes, memorable hooks, polished graphics and all the right spiritual allusions. However, I found the album too squeaky clean. I’d like to hear more musical roots, more lyrical candour and more rough edges  in other words, a little less production. This criticism, however, implies a certain quality in the album that many people will find encouraging and enjoyable. Here’s the score. You ought to purchase this album if you:

  • classify yourself as a baby boomer

  • attend a Bible college

  • attend a “home church”

  • need a birthday gift for your mom

  • liked Michael W. Smith in the late 80s, or

  • read Siddhartha and didn’t understand it.
Kimbal Siebert is a freelance guitarist and instructor, studio engineer and an audio and lighting technician living in Saskatoon. He recently married and is adusting to married life.
