Annie Enns

Annie Enns of Kelowna, B.C. passed away May 22. She was born Nov. 7, 1919 to Henry and Anna Hepting in a German Lutheran community in southern Russia. There was a warm atmosphere in the home, with singing and music. Her parents had become Mennonite Brethren. Her mother was zealous in witnessing. Her father was quiet, but a writer. In 1929 the family immigrated to Yarrow, B.C. In 1932, during an evangelistic service, Annie realized her need for a Saviour and surrendered her life to God. She was baptized a few months later, joining Yarrow MB Church. She did farm work and housework in Yarrow and Vancouver. She attended Bible school for 3 years in Yarrow and Winkler, Man. In 1939 she started a private kindergarten with 40 pupils. She married Henry Enns Oct. 20, 1940. She raised a family, taught Sunday school, started Sunday services for the mentally challenged, moved a few times, reached out to neighbours and those in need, practised hospitality wherever and whenever she had opportunity, sang in choirs, wrote poetry, shared her faith and visited the sick and lonely. She is remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She struggled with various illnesses throughout her life, yet was sustained by God. She was a mom to many children, young adults and older persons, who were drawn to her warmth, generosity and godly wisdom. Predeceased by several brothers and sisters and daughter Margaret Born, she is mourned by Henry; children Esther Giesbrecht of Toronto, David of Vernon, B.C., Arthur of Abbotsford, B.C. and Richard of Iowa; 14 grandchildren; 1 brother and 1 sister. The memorial service was May 27 in Willow Park Church, Kelowna, with Arnie Peters and Mark Burch ministering.
Gertrude Stobbe

Gertrude Stobbe of Kelowna, B.C. passed away Mar. 24. She was born Aug. 18, 1922 to Jacob and Suzanna Stobbe in Kuban, Russia. In 1925 the family immigrated to Hochfeldt, Man. In 1928 they moved to Coaldale, Alta. In 1935 she accepted Christ. In 1938 she was baptized and joined Coaldale MB Church. She attended Coaldale Bible School 1942-43. In 1945 the family moved to Chilliwack, B.C. She worked for a while in Chilliwack, then was a housekeeper in Vancouver for a few years. She taught Sunday school and was involved with the Ambassador Group, a ministry to street people. In 1963 she began work at Jericho Hills School for the Deaf and the Blind. In 1967 she began work as a nurses aide at Pearson Hospital in Vancouver. In 1974 she moved to Kelowna with her mother and sisters Annie and Mary. She worked as a nurses aide in Kelowna General Hospital, retiring in 1983. She had great admiration for all her family. She was excited when her nieces and nephews visited her, and prayed faithfully for them. Predeceased by 1 brother, she is mourned by sisters Annie, Mary, and Helen Stephan and brother Peter. The memorial service was Mar. 29 in Willow Park Church, Kelowna, with Arnie Peters and Mark Burch ministering.
Henry Ens Pauls

Henry Ens Pauls of Abbotsford, B.C. passed away Aug. 11. He was born Feb. 23, 1919 to Heinrich and Liese Ens in Burwalde, Russia. His father died in 1920 of typhus. His mother married Cornelius Pauls. In 1926 the family immigrated to La Salle, Man. At 14, he accepted Christ. In 1941 he was baptized, joining Steinbach (Man.) MB Church. After his step-father died due to a train accident in 1938, Henry took responsibility for his mother and bought a farm in Steinbach. In 1940 his mother married David K. Froese. Henry married Betty Unger Nov. 9, 1941. He loved farming and was a person of the land. His beginning years were difficult, but with hard work his land produced and his dairy herds improved. They later moved to Yarrow, B.C. In 1960 they moved to Rosedale, B.C. Because of health, they moved to a smaller farm in Chilliwack, B.C. in 1967. In 1992 they retired to Abbotsford. He was a committed church member and always made time for the family to attend church. Farming was second to being in church. He was an usher for 30 years. He and Betty were deacons 1976-93. In retirement, he enjoyed playing in the harmonica section of the seniors orchestra. Even when his eyesight failed, he remained strong in his faith and praised God for his many blessings. He is mourned by Betty; children Henry, Judy Kropp, Lillian Thielmann and Dorothy Wiens; 12 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. The funeral was Aug. 18 in Clearbrook MB Church, Abbotsford, with Peter J. Klassen ministering.
Lydia Jeske

Lydia Jeske of Medicine Hat, Alta. passed away Aug. 15. She was born May 1, 1916 to Henry and Katherine Krahn at Graburn, Alta. She helped on the family farm. She married Andrew Jeske Dec. 15, 1943. They farmed near Schuler, Alta. In 1972 they moved to Medicine Hat. Andrew died Nov. 18, 1986. She moved to Chinook Village in 1993 and to Central Park Lodge in June 1998. She was involved in church work, played the organ for 22 years and taught Sunday school for 10 years. Her hobby was gardening and growing flowers. At Chinook Village, she participated in shuffleboard and socializing. Predeceased by Andrew, she is mourned by 1 brother and 1 sister. The funeral was Aug. 18 in Pattison Chapel, Medicine Hat, with Murray Schmidt ministering.
Bernhard P. Funk

Bernhard (Ben, Bernie) P. Funk passed away June 5. He was born May 7, 1936 to Peter B.R. and Margaret Funk near Altona, Man. He accepted Christ in his late teens. He married Ella Hildebrand of Rosenfeld, Man. May 20, 1962. They lived near Lowe Farm, Man., then moved to Cartwright, Man. in 1964, where they farmed for over 27 years. In 1992 they moved to Kaleida, Man., where he farmed and spent his free time with carpentry and with family and friends. He was active in church wherever he lived. His favourite Bible verse was Philemon 4:13. He is mourned by Ella; sons Garry and Cal; 1 granddaughter; 1 sister and 3 brothers. The funeral was June 9 in Westside Community Church, Morden, Man., with John Nikkel and Frank Peters ministering.
Mary Tymburski

Mary Tymburski of Lethbridge, Alta. passed away Aug. 19 at Foothills Hospital in Calgary. She was born Aug. 23, 1935 to Frank A. and Helena Wiens in Cochrane, Alta. They moved to Coaldale before she started school. In 1954 she married Peter Tymburski. She and Peter accepted Christ in 1960, and soon after were baptized in Lethbridge Christian and Missionary Church. In 1979 they moved to Lethbridge. Her greatest joy was in caring for Peter and raising their children to serve the Lord. Her greatest strength came from reading the Bible and living a life of prayer. She strongly supported missions. Her quiet, strong faith in Jesus was evident to others. She worked with the Sunny South News in Coaldale, Alta., was the Coaldale correspondent for Lethbridge Herald and then worked in the circulation department of that newspaper until retirement. She is mourned by Peter; children Gloria Dueck of Red Deer, Alta., Diane Starrenburg of Edmonton, William of Coaldale and Calvin of Lethbridge; 12 grandchildren; 4 sisters and 3 brothers. A memorial service was held Aug. 23 at Victory Church in Lethbridge, with Dick Dewert ministering.
Isaac Klassen

Isaac Klassen of Virgil, Ont. passed away June 18 following a severe stroke. He was born May 8, 1917 to Johann and Maria Klassen in Rosengart, Chortitza, Ukraine, the youngest of 18 children. In 1923 the family moved to Kronsweide. He attended school when teachers were available. He married Elizabeth Niebuhr Krueger in 1939. During World War II, they moved in with her parents in Einlage. In 1943 they fled to Poland. In 1944 he was forced to take military training and was sent to the front. He escaped to the American Zone, then to Germany. He was reunited with his family Christmas Eve 1945. He re-dedicated his life to the Lord and was baptized. In 1948 they moved to Canada, settling in the Niagara area of Ontario. They joined Virgil MB Church. After retiring, he spent much time helping others. After Elizabeth died in 1985, he did short-term work for MDS in the US, sent containers of clothing and medicine to Russia and Brazil and helped new families in the area get settled. In 1989 he married Eleonore Reimer. He is mourned by Eleonore; children Harry, John, Margaret, Art and Alvin; 7 stepchildren and their families; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. The funeral was June 22 in Cornerstone Community Church, Virgil, with Victor Loewen and John Klassen ministering.
John A. Enns

John A. Enns of Elm Creek, Man. passed away suddenly July 24. He was born Aug. 30, 1923 to John B. and Catherine Enns in Roland, Man. When he was 16, the family moved to a farm near Elm Creek. He accepted Christ in 1943; he was baptized, joining Newton (Man.) MB Church. He attended Winnipeg Bible Institute (now Providence College) 1946-49, earning a degree in child psychology. He later served on the Colleges Board for several years. He married Mary Schmidt Oct. 6, 1951. They farmed for 3 years until a flood destroyed their crops. They moved to Winnipeg, where he worked as a taxi driver, a door-to-door salesman and a car mechanic. Two years later, they moved back to the farm. He farmed, drove school bus and sold fire insurance. In retirement, he volunteered at the MCC store in Portage la Prairie, Man. He loved to tinker and fix things. Most of all, his heart was with people, getting to know them and trying to meet their physical and spiritual needs. Church life and faith in God were an integral part of his life. He was an usher and loved to greet people at the door. His confidence in God during stressful times gave his children confidence in God. Predeceased by 3 sisters and 1 brother, he is mourned by Mary; children Gary of Elm Creek, Bob of Altona, Man., Terry Dueck of Airdrie, Alta. and Janice Voth of Oakville, Man.; 7 grandchildren; 1 sister and 3 brothers. The funeral was July 28 in Newton Community Fellowship Church, with Aubrey Krahn ministering.
