Joel Unruh, who during the spring of 1999 worked as an intern in Design and Layout for MBH, won first place for his original artwork entitled “Soap” by the Canadian Church Press. That same piece also won fifth place by the Evangelical Press Association. The artwork, which accompanies an article of the same name by Doug Martens, was published in the June 11 issue of the Herald.

www.opendoorsusa.org is a Web site designed by Open Doors USA to assist Christians to pray for and help 200 million Christians persecuted for their faith in over 60 countries. The Web site gives instructions for undertaking advocacy efforts and posts a daily devotional, first-hand accounts and prayer requests. The site also features an interactive game, the world’s persecution hotspots, a list of resources and a link to the radio broadcast “Frontline World Report”.

Buddhism is a growing phenomenon in the US. Part of its lure are its neutral philosophy and meditation. Corporations that would not consider holding religious retreats have few qualms featuring Buddhism. People can easily adopt its practices without undergoing a religious conversion. Some advocates don’t view it as a religion, but an educational philosophy.

“The Miracle Maker” premiered on ABC television Easter Sunday, pre-empting the classic “The Ten Commandments”. “The Miracle Maker” combines 3-D clay, sophisticated computer effects and animation in a portrayal of Jesus’ life and ministry. Viewers who liked the claymation movie are encouraged to write ABC to let the network know that more projects of this kind should be produced. Evangelist Billy Graham was the most influential Christian of the 20th Century, according to Christian History magazine. Author C.S. Lewis, Pentecostal minister William Seymour and Mother Teresa ranked second, third and fourth on the list, followed by Karl Barth, Pope John XXIII, Soviet novelist Alexandr Solzhenitsyn, US civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., evangelist John R. Mott and Pope John Paul II.

“Praising the Christ of Peace” is a composition by Larry Warkentin that will be performed by a 24-member choir in June and July in Damascus to celebrate 2000 years of Christianity in Syria. Warkentin, a professor at Fresno (Calif.) Pacific University, composed the song for unaccompanied eight-part mixed voices along with the text that reads: “Lord of Love. Lord of Light. Christ of Peace. We will live each day serving the Lord of Love, reflecting the Light of Light, praising the Christ of Peace. All the world will know that we are His disciples when we show love to one another.”

Jubileo en Espaņol is the Spanish version of the Jubilee Sunday school curriculum. Herald Press has released four quarters of Jubilee in Spanish with more scheduled to be released as funds are made available. The four quarters were translated by Zulma Prieto, who also translated the Spanish version of the Confession of Faith in a Mennonite Perspective. The Spanish curriculum will be on display at the Hispanic Mennonite Assembly Aug. 3-6 in Orlando, Fla.

Christian Pirate Radio (www.mycpr.com), an Internet-only station, is the second most listened to station on the Internet, according to the latest Arbitron figures. In January, the station had 81,000 listeners. It is the only Christian music station among Arbitron’s top 25 Internet radio stations, and one of only two stations in the listing not also associated with a traditional radio station. Established in 1997, Christian Pirate Radio plays Christian music by artists such as dcTalk, Jars of Clay, Steven Curtis Chapman, Supertones, Newsboys, Jennifer Knapp, Caedmon’s Call, Crystal Lewis, Michael W. Smith and Audio Adrenaline.

Harold L. Myra, editorial director of Christianity Today, was honoured May 10 by the Evangelical Press Association with the Joseph T. Bayly Award for Outstanding Service to Christian Periodical Publishing, its highest tribute. Over the years, Myra has been an editor, author and publishing executive. He began his journalistic career as associate editor of Youth For Christ magazine, which under his leadership became Campus Life magazine. He became editor of CT in 1975. He also helped launch Leadership and Marriage Partnership magazines. The EPA award comes with a $1,000 US honorarium, which he donated back to EPA for the establishment of a journalism scholarship to be awarded to an African-American student.

The home of evangelist Billy Sunday has been opened to the public. Visitors can see where the famed 1900s preacher and former baseball star prepared for crusades. The Billy Sunday Museum in Winona Lake, Ind., is the result of a $400,000 US restoration project. During his life, Sunday spoke to an estimated 100 million people.

The Indwelling, the seventh installment in the Left Behind series by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins, soared to number two on Amazon.com’s bestsellers list before it reached bookstores on May 30, reaching presales of 1.4 million copies. A movie based on the first book in the series is scheduled to be released in February.

Bill and Gloria Gaither were honoured as “Songwriters of the Century” by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). The Gaithers have authored over 600 songs during a career spanning four decades. During a ceremony held in Nashville, Tenn., Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith and Vince Gill performed a musical tribute of the Gaithers’ songs, including “Because He Lives”, “He touched Me” and “The King Is Coming”.

Stigmata, the movie depicting a woman who experiences the wounds of Christ, has been banned by the government of El Salvador. The film also depicts demon possession and questions the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. Officials in El Salvador say the movie was banned because it was “an attack on public order”. The ban was requested by Salvadoran Roman Catholic Church officials and conservative groups.
