“Hands Across the Water” was the name of a series of news segments that focused on the work of Mennonite Economic Development Associates, Mennonite Central Committee and Ten Thousand Villages in Haiti. The five news segments ran March 13-17 and again as a half-hour documentary April 21 and 23 on a local Winnipeg TV station. A TV reporter and a camera operator accompanied former MCC Haiti Representative Dan Wiens to Haiti. The purpose of the visit was to show how aid can be given in a way so that it doesn’t cause more problems than it prevents. MEDA

Evangelicals, who represent 8% of the adult population in the US, are the most religiously active Christians, with the highest rates of church attendance (80% weekly), Bible reading (92% weekly), sharing their faith (81% per year), giving their money to their church (94% per month) and volunteering at church (48% weekly). Small groups in churches attract about 17% of all adults, including 30% born-again Christians and 55% of evangelicals. In general, adult participation in Sunday school programs is about 19% in a typical week, down from the early 1990s; 40% of adults attend a church service in a typical Sunday, a drop from the early 1990s when close to half of all Americans attended services in a typical week, but the figure is relatively unchanged since 1994. Over 40% of adults read the Bible in a typical week. The findings are based on a telephone survey conducted by Barna Research Group. Evangelical Press News Service
