The Women of Influence essay contest is open to women, ages 18 and over, to write an essay of 500 to 1500 words, sharing their personal story of how they were impacted by someone special in their life and what that person taught them. The person might have been a long-time mentor or a passing acquaintance who had a profound impact. The winning essay will receive a free copy of Becoming a Woman of Influence by Carol Kent, the new Discipleship Journal CD-ROM package (a $100 US value) and an all-expense paid weekend retreat with Kent in Indianapolis, Ind. The presentation will be made at the Heritage Keepers conference. The winner will also receive a gift to give to the subject of her essay. The contest is sponsored by NavPress Publishing Group in conjunction with Discipleship Journal and the Heritage Keepers Conference. Beyond the News: Facing Death, a new discussion video produced by Mennonite Media, is full of stories of persons who have faced death and the lessons they have learned. The 34-minute video addresses issues such as what it means to take care of a dying family member, how a young family faces a serious illness and what kinds of decisions need to be made in planning a funeral. It is closed captioned for the hearing impaired and comes with a complete study guide. Miracle in Lane 2 is a movie about a 13-year-old Mennonite boy with spina bifida scheduled to air on the Disney Channel in May. Justin Yoder of Middlebury, Ind., who is paralyzed from the waist down, is a soap-box derby racer. He has won many local races and has qualified for national competitions three times. The movie explores his struggles with his disability and his faith. Joel Kauffman, creator of the Pontius Puddle cartoon, and Don Yost of Bridgework Theater in Goshen, Ind., wrote the script. The Yoders are members of College Mennonite Church in Goshen.

Tom Landry, legendary head coach of the Dallas Cowboys football team, died Feb. 12 after a battle with leukemia. Billy Graham called Landry “one of the greatest Christian gentlemen I ever knew” and expressed his appreciation for Landry’s support of his crusades over the years. Landry attended Highland Park United Methodist Church and is remembered as a devout Christian who appreciated life and taught others to do the same. He coached the Cowboys for 29 years, leading the team to 20 consecutive winning seasons and two Super Bowl titles.
