Peter Teske

Peter Teske of St. Catharines, Ont. passed away Dec. 12. He was born Apr. 4, 1932 to Peter and Helena Teske in Alexanderfeld, Ukraine. He made his commitment to Christ soon after coming to Canada. He married Susan Penner July 25, 1953. He retired after over 38 years on the V-8 engine block line at General Motors, Plant 2. He appreciated life; enjoyed bowling, golfing with friends, reading, camping and canoeing; and was an avid rose gardener. He enjoyed people and was an usher in his church. Cancer was found six years ago. He faced the struggle with courage, staying positive, active and involved. He was much loved. He is mourned by Susan; children Rudy, Sharron, and Carol Lautenbach; 7 grandchildren; and 2 sisters. The funeral was Dec. 15 in Grantham MB Church, St. Catharines, with John Wiebe and Richard deLange ministering.
Robert Donald Shields

Robert Donald Shields of Manitou, Man. passed away Oct. 13. He was born Aug. 16, 1920 to James and Myrtle Shields in the Archibald District of Manitoba. He married Doris Kathleen Deamel Dec. 15, 1942. They lived in Hagersville, Ont., where he was stationed with the Air Force. After his discharge, they returned to the Archibald District, moving to La Riviere, Man. in 1948 and to Manitou in 1998. He enjoyed spending time with his children in coaching baseball and working in 4-H clubs. In the community, he was involved with Pool Elevators, the La Riviere credit union, the School Board, the La Riviere Centennial Committee and church. His sense of humour, genuine interest, caring attitude and level head were appreciated by many. In 1975 he accepted Christ, influenced by his wifes Christian example and prayers. In 1978 he was baptized and joined a Bible teaching church. In 1994 he joined Manitou MB Church. He served with enthusiasm, and had a deep gratitude for what God had done in his life. Predeceased by 2 brothers, a sister and an infant daughter, he is mourned by Doris; children Sandra Reimer, Wendy Johnson and Dale; 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. The funeral was Oct. 16 in Manitou MB Church.
Maria Braun

Maria Braun passed away Nov. 22 of a heart attack in Swift Current, Sask. She was born Jan. 16, 1920 to John and Helena Fast in Russia. In 1926 the family immigrated to Beechy, Sask. In 1938 they moved to Virgil, Ont. She married John L. Braun June 8, 1941. They lived in Beechy. In 1960 they moved to Admiral, Sask., retiring to Swift Current in 1978. She was devoted to her family. She shared her time and her hospitality with others. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and baking and giving away her crocheted items. She is remembered for her service to others; her love of games, especially Scrabble; her love of reading, sharing her books with others; and her deep concern for the spiritual welfare of her family. She faithfully supported various Christian organizations. Predeceased by 5 brothers, 1 sister and 1 grandson, she is mourned by John; children Marie of Regina, Lorence of Calgary, Loretta Catchlove of Australia, Dick of Simmie, Sask., Rosella Unger of Waldeck, Sask., Terry of Admiral, Victoria Posmituck of Red Deer, Alta., Erna Ball of Delta, B.C., Nancy McCann of Regina, Danny of Admiral, Arlene Bowers, Carol Gates and Val Moen, all of Swift Current, and Tim of Leduc, Alta.; 18 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers and 1 sister. The funeral was Nov. 25 in Bridgeway Community Church, Swift Current, with Cliff Janzen ministering.
Bernard Brandt

Bernard Brandt of Winnipeg, formerly of Fort St. John, B.C., passed away July 7. He was born Apr. 1, 1938 to John K. and Anna Brandt in Dalmeny, Sask. He moved to Manitoba and started school at Burwalde. When he was 9, the family moved to Chilliwack, B.C. He came to know the Lord in his teens, was baptized and joined East Chilliwack MB Church. He attended East Chilliwack Bible School. He then went to Mennonite Educational Institute in Abbotsford, B.C. for grade 13. He married Rose Hooge Aug. 29, 1960 in Clearbrook, B.C. He took teachers training at the University of British Columbia. In 1962 he began teaching in Golden, B.C. He also taught in Ocean Falls and the Queen Charlotte Islands, then moved to Fort St. John in 1968. He remained there in teaching and administration until his retirement in 1993. They were members of North Peace MB Church, where he was involved in Christian Service Brigades, Camp Sagitawa and other ministries. In 1994 he and Rose moved to Akron, Pa. to serve with MCC. He was diagnosed with pancreatic and colon cancer in September 1998. They then moved to Winnipeg to be near family. He was a loyal father, thoughtful husband and enthusiastic grandfather. He is remembered for his boisterous laugh and his Tilley hat. Predeceased by a sister and a brother, he is mourned by Rose; daughters Debbie Neufeld of Fresno, Calif. and Alissa Brandt Murenzi of Winnipeg; 4 grandchildren; 5 brothers and 4 sisters. The memorial service was July 12 in Aberdeen Evangelical Mennonite Church in Winnipeg, with Ardith Frey and Herb Brandt ministering.
Eileen Mabel Fast

Eileen Mabel Fast of Hepburn, Sask. passed away Nov. 27 of a heart attack. She was born Nov. 9, 1932 to Henry and Susie Friesen at Waldheim, Sask. At a very young age, she accepted Christ. She was baptized May 21, 1956 in Waldheim Zoar Church. After high school, she married Eldred Fast. They had two daughters, who were the light of her life. She enjoyed sewing clothes for them. She loved to cook and bake. She was a practical joker, and had a mischievous grin and a twinkle in her eyes. She taught her daughters that faith would get them though everything and how to be the best mom they could be. She took pride and interest in everything her grandchildren did. She had a zest for life. She and Eldreds closeness and dedication to each other were an inspiration. After Eldred retired, they occasionally travelled with The Evangelical Alliance Mission and Mennonite Disaster Service. After a serious illness in 1996, she had many health struggles. Predeceased by her parents, she is mourned by Eldred; daughters Bev Letkeman and Cindy Sansom; 3 grandchildren; 1 brother and stepmother Margaret Friesen. The funeral was Dec. 1 in Waldheim MB Church, with Clarence Peters ministering.
Otto-Heinz Penner

Otto-Heinz Penner of Abbotsford, B.C. passed away Nov. 23. He was born Apr. 16, 1931 to Cornelius and Maria Penner in Schoeneberg, Ukraine. In 1936 the family moved to Einlage, Ukraine. In October 1943 they were evacuated to Poland, then to Germany. In 1944 his father was drafted into the army. The family moved to Reichenbach, Saxony. After the war, they were sent to Irkutsk, Siberia. Otto, 14, had to work very hard and could not go to school. He worked at an orphanage, where he also stayed for food and shelter. He faced death several times. In 1951 the family received word that their father was living in Winnipeg. In 1956 Otto married Geneveva Müller. In 1958 they moved to Tadzhikistan, where he worked in construction. In 1972 they came to Canada, where he was reunited with his father. His father died of a heart attack 2 months later. He worked in construction and later at Columbia Kitchen Cabinets in Abbotsford until retirement. He accepted Christ, was baptized and joined Kind Road MB Church, Abbotsford, in 1977. He loved music, going for walks and talking to people. He was a private man, and felt misunderstood at times. He always provided for his family, and would always help when asked. He struggled with some issues in his life, but tried to get answers from God. He tried to do his best, but felt at times that he had failed. Predeceased by a brother, he is mourned by Eva; children Laura Gaudet, Arthur, and Adeline Wiens, all of Abbotsford; 9 grandchildren; and 2 sisters. The funeral was Nov. 27 in King Road MB Church, with Alvin Enns, Don Enns and Peter C. Penner ministering.
