Jerry Giesbrecht has been called as youth pastor at Fraserview MB Church, Richmond, B.C., effective Jan. 2. For the past year-and-a-half, he has been studying at MB Biblical Seminary in Fresno, Calif. Previously, he was youth pastor for three years and intern for a year in Culloden MB Church in Vancouver. He has a bachelor’s degree from Briercrest Bible College in Caronport, Sask., and has studied at Regent College, Vancouver. He and his wife Karin have a son, Cole, 6 months old.

Oscar Carvjal has been called as pastor of Centro Famaliar Spanish Church in Winnipeg, effective Dec. 1. Previously, he pastored the Spanish congregation in First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, Ont., for eight months; studied and worked with the Seminary Consortium for Urban Pastoral Education (SCUPE) in Chicago for one year; was assistant pastor of the Mennonite Spanish church in Chicago for two years; was assistant pastor of the Spanish Church in Holland, Mich. for one year; trained as a missionary with Youth With A Mission in El Paso, Tex.; and served in the Mennonite and national churches in Bogotá, Colombia for nine years. He has a B.A. from Distrital University in Bogotá, an M.A. from Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Elkhart, Ind. and an M.Th. from Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ont. He and his wife Marcella have two children, Pawl T.J., 4, and Kathyana Joie, 11 months old.



Dave Ens has resigned as youth pastor at McIvor Ave. MB Church in Winnipeg, effective Dec. 31, after serving for five years. He plans to enter full-time seminary studies. Previously, he worked one year for a manufacturing company in Winnipeg. He has a B.R.S. from MB Bible (Concord) College and has studied at the University of Winnipeg. He and his wife Nicole, a teacher, have a daughter, Megan, 5 months old.

Twenty-nine workers participated in orientation at Mennonite Central Committee headquarters in Akron, Pa., Nov. 2-12. Seven are beginning overseas assignments, 21 are beginning assignments in North America, and one is a national worker from Indonesia, who was a guest at orientation. Michael and Kleanza Bennett of Grande Prairie, Alta. are beginning three-year assignments in Zambia. Michael will teach, while Kleanza’s assignment is still pending. Michael has a bachelor’s degree in microbiology from the University of Saskatchewan; Kleanza earned a diploma in biblical studies from Bethany Bible Institute in Hepburn, Sask. Previously, Michael was a lab technician and Kleanza a secretary in Grande Prairie. They are members of La Glace (Alta.) Bible Fellowship.
Jim Somerville
Jim Somerville of Fresno, Calif. is beginning a two-year assignment as director of the developmental disabilities programs in Reedley, Calif. He has an M.Div. from MB Biblical Seminary. Previously, he was a chaplain in St. Catharines, Ont. He and his wife Becky are members of Community Bible Church in St. Catharines. Their children are Brendan and Sean.
Irene Thiessen
Irene Thiessen of Baden, Ont. is beginning a two-year assignment as an administrative assistant with MCC Ontario in Kitchener. She has a procedural secretary degree from Niagara College of Applied Technology in Welland, Ont. Previously, she worked as an auditor in New Hamburg, Ont. She and her husband Vic are members of Glencairn MB Church, Kitchener. Their children are Brian and David.
